Goal: Publication Result: Goal Accomplished
I scribbled @ 7:48 p.m. on 2006-07-14
At times I get frustrated and feel that my goals are impossible, but I have now realized that they are close and within my reach. The training (The New Jersey Writing Project) that I went to for three weeks in June really paid off. I learned an immense amount of methods to teach students to write and create depth within their writing. We even learned about how our brains work. As part of our training we were required to write two pieces, a reflexive and extensive piece. My reflexive piece was about my memories of Frederick's difficult times during his stay at the NICU, while my extensive was a shorter version of my graduate work essay. The reflexive was published in a short booklet that we all received, and the longer piece could be written in the genre of our choosing and sent to whatever publication we desired. Well, I decided to convert my research into a minimized article and sent it to The Rio Grande City Herald.
I had stopped thinking about my article and did not think that they had considered it. I thought that i was probably just discarded. That was certainly not the case. Fred's dad came over to pick up our car (it was in need of repairs) and simply told me, "Oh Johanna, your article is in the Herald today." I could not believe what I was hearing. He said it like if it was no big deal. I wanted to jump up and down with joy. I messaged Fred, who was in school, and could not wait to get my hands on it.
We went to HEB to get somethings that we needed and got like ten copies of the paper. It is actually one that doesn't get many readers, so that is a little disappointment. But it is still an awesome accomplishment and one that can be added to my resume. I even took a picture of it with my cell phone when I saw it at the post office. It is front page! I cannot believe that I am finally published!!!!! My grandpa would have been so proud :(
